MALIBU, Calif. - A breakout performance from freshman Yasmin de Lara was a bright spot in North Texas volleyball's 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-22) loss to Idaho on Sunday afternoon. The Brazilian outside hitter had a season- and team-high 10 kills, along with an ace and a block.
De Lara tallied five of her 11.5 points in the opening set, including three kills and an ace as part of a 6-2 run after the Vandals started with a 6-2 lead. Her final kill of the set pulled the Mean Green within two at 22-20, but Idaho held off North Texas down the stretch to take set one.
In set two, de Lara had two early kills and assisted on a block with Rhett Robinson to give the Mean Green an early 4-3 lead. After the Vandals used a 7-1 streak to go ahead 10-7, North Texas scored four straight points, thanks to back-to-back aces by Robinson. The Mean Green finished the match with five aces.
After one of Jordyn Williams' eight kills evened the score at 14-14, Idaho closed the set out on a 11-4 run to take a 2-0 lead in the match. The Vandals took that momentum into set three, jumping out to a 12-5 advantage.
UNT once again responded to their hot streak with one of its own as seven Idaho errors contributed to a 12-5 run to knot it at 17-17. After four-straight Vandals points, even a pair of kills each for Robinson and Valerie Valerian could mount a successful comeback.
