BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Madison Townley recorded a career-high 16 points for North Texas, but the Mean Green were outscored in the third and fourth quarters in a 70-60 loss at UAB inside Bartow Arena Saturday afternoon.
North Texas (10-8, 3-3 C-USA) outrebounded UAB (18-2, 6-1 C-USA), 38-to-32, as the teams shot nearly the same on field goals. The Blazers knocked down 25 of their 31 attempts from the free throw line while the Mean Green made 15 of their 19 tries.
Terriell Bradley also posted 16 points for North Texas, and Velma Mitchell added a dozen. Brittany Smith handed out a game-high six assists and joined Townley with game-high honors in rebounds with six.
"We worked really, really hard," head coach Jalie Mitchell said. "The biggest difference was shooting the ball, which was not as good for us in the second half. We battled, but they made a few big plays."
Bradley tied the contest at 51-all with 7:18 to play in the fourth quarter before the Blazers went on to score six straight. Mitchell hit a jumper to cut the deficit to four, but UAB knocked down a contested shot in the lane with four seconds left on the shot clock to go up 61-55 with 1:31 remaining. Bradley converted a shot in the paint to make it 62-57 with 44 seconds on the clock as UNT resorted to fouling, but the Blazers sank every one of their eight final attempts to lock up the win.
UAB began the game on a 7-0 run until Grace Goodhart opened up the UNT scoring with a jumper, and Bradley and Mitchell each hit a three to tie the game at 8-8. The Mean Green took a 14-10 advantage after a Townley drive to the hole.
The Blazers pushed ahead, 25-21, in the second quarter, but two free throws by Townley with three minutes to go until the half gave the lead back to North Texas at 28-27. UAB drained a pair from the line, and Townley made a layup for a 32-32 game heading into halftime.
UAB again started strong to take a 39-33 lead to begin the second half before buckets by Townley, Goodhart, and Mitchell tied things up. UNT fell behind, 48-43, before Townley connected on a baseline jumper to trim the margin to three with 3:02 to play until the fourth quarter.
