Mean Green Top Hawai'i With Clutch Shooting
11/29/2019 11:50:00 PM | Women's Basketball
HONOLULU – Senior post Anisha George had a season-high 21 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for her fourth double-double in six games, and freshman point guard N'Yah Boyd's clutch free-throw shooting down the stretch sealed a 66-60 road win over Hawai'i on Friday night.
George had a monstrous first half, as she started the game 8-for-8 from the field and had 18 points at the break before letting some of her teammates pick up some scoring slack in the second half. Boyd hit four free throws in the final 18 seconds, as UNT shot 75% from the line as a team after five games of struggling from the charity stripe. UNT led by as many as 15 points late in the first half and was forced to hold on in the end for the win.
"N'Yah came up huge at the end of that game," UNT head coach Jalie Mitchell said. "Any time we shoot the ball well we have a great chance to win, and I thought we bought in on both ends. Defensively, we made an adjustment on (Hawai'i's Amy Atwell) who had 10 in the first half but had three in the second. I want to give a lot of credit to our team for the way they showed up on both ends.
"This is a game unlike we've had before this year, being a game we had to step up and finish. I'm just proud," Mitchell added.
While some games this year for UNT (3-3, 0-0 C-USA) have seen much of the scoring forced to fall on George and freshman forward Destinee McDowell, Friday night was different.
The Mean Green had three players in double figures, one with eight points and one with seven.
Redshirt junior guard Callie Owens scored 13 – tying a UNT career high for the Pacific transfer – on 5-for-7 shooting and went 3-for-5 from beyond the arc. Boyd finished the day with a career-high 11 points and went 6-for-9 from the foul line, including those four clutch shots in the final seconds.
"She's been that player her entire career," Mitchell said of Boyd. "When these freshmen get their minutes and get comfortable and confident, they can do things like this. I thought she helped win that game for us with those free throws."
Redshirt junior Madison Townley scored a season-high eight points, and McDowell added seven.
For the game, UNT shot 44.9% from the field after a blistering first half when the Mean Green shot 53.6% from the field.
The Mean Green will take on Texas (3-3, 0-0 Big 12) on Saturday at 4 p.m., before finishing the Rainbow Wahine Showdown Sunday at 4 p.m., against No. 12 NC State.
