Pirtle Named C-USA Offensive POTW

DALLAS - North Texas tight end Jason Pirtle was named Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week following his three-touchdown performance in the Mean Green's season-opening 51-31 win over Abilene Christian, the league office announced Monday. C-USA Football Players of the Week are voted on by a panel of the league's media. All C-USA weekly awards are presented by Top of the World Headwear.
Pirtle hauled in four catches for 88 yards and three touchdowns on Saturday night. His first touchdown of the night was the first of his career and came on the first play from scrimmage for the Mean Green. Pirtle's touchdowns came from distances of 32, 17 and 12 yards. His three touchdowns in a single game tied for the second-most in program history. Pirtle was the only tight end in the FBS to catch three touchdown passes on the opening weekend of the season and just four players scored more touchdowns.
North Texas (1-0, 0-0 C-USA) returns to action this week when the Mean Green travel to Dallas to take on Metroplex rival SMU (1-0, 0-0 AAC). The game kicks off at 6 p.m. CT on ESPN3 and the Mean Green Sports Network from Gerald J. Ford Stadium.
