STILLWATER, Okla. – Senior Lauren Cox fired a 5-under-par 67 in the afternoon round of a 36-hole day at Karsten Creek Golf Club at the Cowgirl Classic on Thursday and helped the Mean Green women enter Friday's final round in fourth place at a loaded field north of the Red River.
UNT shot a 308-298 in the first two rounds and sits at 30-over par, just three shots behind host Oklahoma State for third place and 10 shots clear of fifth-place Kansas State. Cox is in second place at even-par heading into Friday's final round, when weather conditions that were tough today with 35 mph winds are expected to take a turn for the worse with similar winds and much cooler temperatures in the 40s. Cox had seven birdies in the second round alone, and her 67 was the only sub-70 round on the day.
Junior Patricia Sinolungan is in 11th place after shooting back-to-back 75s, including a gutsy effort in Round 2 when she started the round with two double-bogeys before rebounding. Cox and Sinolungan are 1-2 in the field, respectively, in Par 3 scoring through the first two rounds.
"The conditions were not easy," UNT head coach Michael Akers said. "The wind gusted over 35 mph at times. Overall, we did fine. Lauren had an amazing afternoon round. She really carried us. I also feel (Sinolungan) grinded this afternoon. She started with two (double-bogeys) in Round 2 but kept fighting and finished 3-over. The forecast tomorrow is really bad. We need to manage the conditions and play smart. It will be mind over matter."
Juniors Katie Finley and Audrey Tan rounded out the UNT scoring with 12-over-par showings and are tied for 22nd.
UNT is one of only two non-Big 12 teams in the field, which featured several teams that ended last season ranked in the top 50 of GolfStat's national poll. The first rankings of the 2020-21 season are set to be released on Nov. 17. However, Golfweek released its initial rankings this week, and the Mean Green checked in at No. 6 nationally.
Fans can follow the tournament on GolfStat, as teams are set for an 8:45 a.m., shotgun start on Friday to conclude the tournament. Fans can follow the program on Twitter and Facebook, as well as on MeanGreenSports.com.
