DENTON – The North Texas women's basketball team ended a seven-game losing streak on Saturday night with a dominating 94-55 victory at The Super Pit. Ninety-four points is a season high against a Division I opponent.
The win comes at a pivotal time for North Texas, who put themselves in a solid position to earn a spot in the Conference USA Tournament. The Mean Green (10-17, 4-11 C-USA) now sit two games ahead of both UTSA and FIU with three games remaining.
The Mean Green forced 12 turnovers and held the Roadrunners to a 32.8 field goal percentage.
"I'm pleased with our defense from a standpoint of the percentages we held them to," head coach Jalie Mitchell said. "Holding an opponent to under 60 points is always our goal. I'm also pleased with our offensive execution and staying aggressive and getting to the free throw line more than them...This is the most complete game we've played in awhile. I think there was definitely some growth shown in some areas that we've needed to grow over the last several weeks."
Anisha George continued her torrid run through the month of February, finishing with a career-high 26 points and 15 rebounds. George picked up her seventh double-double of the season just two minutes into the third quarter. The senior forward has averaged 19.4 points per game in the last five contests.
Charlene Shepherd also eclipsed the 20-point mark for the second time this season. The Killeen, Texas, native finished her night with a career-high 24 points on nine of 11 shooting from the floor.
"We owned the boards," Mitchell said. "I thought our post players went to work tonight. Our post presence was felt for 40 minutes, and that's how it should be."
North Texas never trailed in the wire-to-wire victory. Summer Jones knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers to spark a 10-0 run at the beginning of the second period to help the Mean Green pull away from the Roadrunners. UNT would go on to make its final eight field goals of the first half to take a 52-23 lead into the break.
"I felt like we've been working hard the last few games, and it felt good to finish this one with a win," George said.
The Mean Green's three reserves provided an offensive boost in the win, accounting for 33 points.
Randi Thompson scored 11 points for the Mean Green while Jones added another nine. Freshman point guard N'Yah Boyd dished out a team-high six assists in the win.
UNT will get an entire week off before traveling to Huntsville, West Virginia next Saturday for a 12 p.m. tilt with Marshall.
