DENTON – A cold shooting spell in the fourth quarter doomed North Texas in an 80-60 loss to Middle Tennessee on Thursday night at The Super Pit.
After scoring 43 points in the first half, the Mean Green (9-13, 3-7 C-USA) struggled to find the bottom of the net during the final 20 minutes. North Texas scored just 17 points in the second half while shooting 25.8% from the floor.
"Right now we're playing about 30 minutes of a game the way we're supposed to," head coach Jalie Mitchell said. "The other 10 [minutes] I can't even explain. We have to figure out how to put a 40-minute game together."
Despite the struggles, UNT still held a 56-55 lead heading into the fourth quarter. However, the Blue Raiders didn't take long to get back ahead. Middle Tennessee started the final period on a 16-0 run en route to outscoring the Mean Green 25-4 in the quarter.
"I thought that in the fourth quarter we went away from what was working," Mitchell said. "We didn't hit shots, and I thought that affected our energy and intensity defensively. We weren't able to push the pace as much as we were earlier because we didn't get as many stops."
North Texas got off to a hot start behind senior forward Anisha George. After winning the opening tip, George put the Mean Green on the board just six seconds into the game. She would go on to score 12 points in the first quarter to put UNT up 24-13 at the end of one.
The Mean Green went on to score 43 first half points, the most against a Division I opponent this season.
George led the Mean Green with 14 points, while freshman N'Yah Boyd scored 11 points and Madison Townley and Charlene Shepherd recorded 10 apiece.
Middle Tennessee (16-7, 8-3 C-USA) started off the game making just five of its first 22 shots, but the Blue Raiders quickly recovered to shoot 46.3% for the game to hand North Texas its third straight loss.
The Mean Green had trouble containing Preseason All-Conference USA selection Anastasia Hayes. The Blue Raider guard scored a team high 33 points, while her sister Aislynn Hayes finished with 13 points.
North Texas has now lost three straight and six of its last eight as they continue to play for a spot in the Conference USA tournament at the end of the season.
The Mean Green will look to get back on track Saturday at 2 p.m. when they host UAB at The Super Pit.
