NORMAN –North Texas track and field wrapped up the final meet of the regular indoor season Saturday at the J.D. Martin Invitational hosted by Oklahoma, two weeks out from the Conference USA Championships.
"It was a nice day for our team," director of track and field Carl Sheffield said. "We competed well with many good efforts leading into championship part of our season."
The Mean Green throwers had a productive day with several placing in different events. In weight throw, Haley Walker (2nd, 17.71 meters), Jaleisa Shaffer (5th, 15.78) and Ashlynn Smart (7th, 15.68) each placed, as did Chris Samaniego (5th, 17.52), Wardell Glaspie (6th, 15.97) and Karl Sralla (7th, 15.93). In shot put, it was Shaffer (5th, 14.57) and Macayla Needham (8th, 13.44) along with Kendal Maples (7th, 15.17) and Samaniego (8th, 14.94).
Jacob Franks took the pole vault title at 4.85 meters, as William Fesler placed sixth at 4.55 and Jacob VanPatten eighth at 4.35. Bailey Ashmore earned fourth place with a vault of 3.75 meters.
Charlotte Kerr was runner-up in high jump at 1.75 meters, and Megan Palu was seventh at 1.60. In triple jump, Valencia Bullock took sixth at 12.40 meters, and Tatum Henderson finished eighth at 11.23. Yannick Kalidas jumped to seventh place in his first showing of the season in the event with a mark of 13.91. In long jump, Denver Mims registered 5.61 meters for fifth.
Darrian Johnson earned third place in the 800-meter dash in a time of 2:25.53, while Alec Esposito was seventh in 1:58.45.
In the distance events, Aubrey Schmidt was fourth in the mile by clocking a 5:12.61, and Jennifer White finished seventh in the 3000-meter run in 10:59.22.
Taylor Blackshire ran the 200 in 26.03 seconds for fourth place, Lyric Choice was fifth in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.81, and Michael Adams notched eighth in the 400 in 53.79.
"It's been a tough four weeks," said Sheffield. "We're looking forward to getting some last minute fine tuning for the conference championships."
