ST. GEORGE, Utah – Senior Lauren Cox held on for her first collegiate individual title, as the North Texas women's golf team finished off a dominant victory in the Entrada Classic at Snow Canyon Country Club on Tuesday. The Mean Green cruised to a 19-stroke win over second-place Iowa with a three-day score of 875 and 11-over par, and Cox's par on the 18th hole, coupled with a double-bogey from a BYU golfer, broke a first-place tie and gave Cox the win.
"I'm very proud of this win. Wins are rare in college golf because we play against 12-17 teams every event," UNT coach Michael Akers said. "This was an event we had to win in order to keep our ranking inside the (NCAA tournament) bubble."
The tournament championship is the first for the Mean Green since the 2010-11 season when the team won four tournaments. Cox's title is the first for an individual since the 2012-13 season when Georgina Mundy won the UALR Women's Golf Classic.
Cox wasn't the only Mean Green golfer who found success over the two-day event. Sophomore Audrey Tan finished in a tie for third at 2-over, while sophomore Patricia Sinolungan tied for fifth at 4-over. Freshman Emilie Ricaud tied for 10th at 8-over, and freshman Marija Jucmane, who competed as an individual, finished tied for 15th at 10-over.
"Lauren's win was fun to watch," Akers said. "She made a clutch up-and-down on 18 to seal the victory. Audrey also had a great final round."
The Mean Green will return to action at the Mountainview Collegiate in Tucson, Arizona, on March 20-22.
"We have a short turnaround until the Arizona event," Akers said. "Fortunately, the elevation and course conditions are similar, so BYU was a great warmup."
