FRISCO – North Texas women's basketball rallied from a 19-point fourth quarter deficit to pull within two with less than a minute remaining, but the 2019-20 Mean Green season came to a close with a 71-67 loss to Charlotte Wednesday at the Air Force Reserve Conference USA Championships at The Star.
All-conference selection Anisha George capped her career with a team-high 14 points, N'Yah Boyd scored 13, and Jazion Jackson added 12. Madison Townley grabbed a dozen rebounds, while Boyd and Jackson each dished out five assists.
"We waited too late," head coach Jalie Mitchell said. "We played the fourth quarter the way we wanted to play 40 minutes. I don't know if some of it is just youth and not being on this stage. If so, I hope this is a great learning experience for them."
North Texas (12-19) trailed Charlotte (21-9) 64-54 with under five minutes to play before George went to work underneath and scored three straight buckets and Townley sank two midrange jumpers to make it a two-point game with 1:42 remaining. Two Charlotte free throws were negated by another George field goal, and the 49ers extended their lead to four on free throws with 18 seconds on the clock. With eight seconds to go, George scored inside as the Mean Green then quickly fouled, but Charlotte made both freebies to put the game out of reach.
"We realized that time was running out," George said. "We should have been fighting the whole game. At the beginning of the fourth we came out playing how we should have been playing."
A backdoor cut by Randi Thompson produced the first points of the contest, and a right side drive by Jackson kept North Texas up by a pair at 4-2. A 3-pointer from the left wing by Charlene Shepherd broke a 10-0 Charlotte run to pull the Mean Green to within 12-9 with just under four minutes to play in the first quarter. George closed the period with a pair of free throws to shrink the gap to 19-15.
The 49ers scored the first four points of the second stanza to go up 23-15 before a Boyd three from the top of the key. Boyd then connected on two free throws and a stepback jumper to make it a five-point contest. Jackson hit from the right baseline and made a pair from the line to cap a 12-3 run and close North Texas to within 32-28.
Townley grabbed her own miss for a putback before Charlotte scored eight straight for a 42-30 advantage with 5:34 on the clock. Summer Jones corralled a missed free throw and converted a jumper, and the deficit continued to be a dozen following a Charlotte layup and free throws by Randi Thompson. The 49ers ended the period with five straight points to extend the margin to 56-39.
"I want them (the young kids) to take this and build on it, grow from it and learn everything there is to learn. You gotta fight like heck for 40 minutes," Mitchell said.
