NORMAN, Okla. – The North Texas women's golf team shot a final-round 301 to slip to a fourth-place finish at The Schooner Fall Classic on Monday at Belmar Golf Club following an opening day on Sunday that saw the Mean Green rewrite their record book with a program-best 281 in the opening round.
The fourth-place finish was still a strong start to the season, as the field was loaded with seven teams that finished last season ranked in the top 50 of GolfStat's national poll, including four top-25 teams, led by No. 2 Texas.
Senior Lauren Cox was the bright spot on Monday, as she shot a final-round 68 to pull into a tie for third place with Baylor's Britta Snyder – four shots off Baylor's Gurleen Kaur and Kansas State's Reid Isaac, who tied for first. Baylor, which finished last year ranked No. 20, won the tournament.
"Lauren really played well today," UNT coach Michael Akers said. "She was steady and showed why she has numerous UNT records."
Play on Sunday was suspended in the middle of the second round due to high winds, and UNT had to finish the final four holes of the second round before beginning final-round play. The Mean Green entered the final nine holes in second place, trailing only Baylor, but still finished ahead of some powerhouse programs like Texas (No. 2 to end last season), Texas Tech (No. 24) and Oklahoma State (No. 17).
"We are certainly not pleased to finish the way we did," Akers said. "The conditions were very difficult and we did not manage them very well coming down the stretch. It will prove as a learning experience, however."
Junior Audrey Tan finished at 9-over to notch T-21st finish.
The Mean Green will return to action at the Betsy Rawls Invitational on Oct. 10-11, in Austin, where they will face many of the same teams they saw in Oklahoma.
"We look forward to preparing for the UT tournament and facing these teams again," Akers said. "The fall events count toward our national ranking and ultimately our goal of the NCAAs."
