MANHATTAN, Kan. – North Texas track and field competed at the Wildcat Invitational hosted by Kansas State Saturday inside Ahearn Field House.
"Not a bad start to the season," director of track and field Carl Sheffield said. "We'll take competitions where we can get them. It was a good chance to see where we actually are against competition. We had a lot of top eight finishes and had some people set personal bests or were really close to lifetime bests."
Chris Samaniego began the 2021 season with a career-best throw of 16.39 meters in shot put to take the title and earned runner-up honors in the weight throw at 17.70.
Cody Bullard also had his best performance at North Texas in pole vault at 5.05 meters to take first place. Bailey Ashmore also won top honors at 3.85 meters.
In the mile, Audrey Springer finished first in a personal record time of 5:19.34, and Gwyneth Garcia timed in at 5:22.10 for second.
In the 60-meter dash, the Mean Green grabbed the top three spots with Kayla McDonald finishing first in 7.89 seconds, Taylor Blackshire in 7.99 and Glenquoia Hardy in 8.01.

Antonio Delacruz was second in the 60-meter dash in 6.76 seconds. Samir Williams was third (6.80), Davonye Jones fourth with a personal record (6.90) and Tyler Walls seventh (7.15). In the 60-meter hurdles, Joseph Squire was second in 8.24 seconds, Jordan Coates-McBride third (8.51) and Jomauri Murray fourth (8.54).
Haley Walker placed second in weight throw with a toss of 16.69 meters. Ashlynn Smart was fourth (15.62), Jaleisa Shaffer sixth (15.46) and Macayla Neeham eighth with a personal record (14.81). Shaffer threw to third place in shot put at 14.20 meters.
The 4x400 relay team consisting of Macy Burnham, McDonald, Liah Collins and Lyric Choice ran a 4:01.96 to conclude second. Individually, Burnham was second in the 300 in 41.24, and Collins ran a 1:28.69 in the 600-yard run for a runner-up finish.
"Our coaches have done a tremendous job given the challenges of training in a pandemic," Sheffield said. "We will continue to work through the testing protocols, training and travel as we prepare a group to participate at the Conference USA championships next month."
