Soccer Concludes Regular Season With Draw

DENTON -- The 16-time conference champion North Texas women's soccer team wrapped up the 2021 regular season Thursday night with a 1-1 draw at home with Rice.Â
UNT (8-4-4, 3-3-2) outshot the Owls (10-5-2, 3-3-2) 37-10 and held them to no shots on target in the second half or overtime periods. With Thursday's draw the Mean Green finish the regular season Conference USA standings with 11 points and finish fifth in the west division. North Texas secured a spot in next week's league tournament after beating Louisiana Tech last Friday, 2-1.
Prior to Thursday's match, the Mean Green honored six seniors who were playing their final home match.Â
"I of course would have rather gone out with a win," said fifth-year senior captain Brooke Lampe. "I thought we worked real hard tonight but just couldn't finish. We'll work on that and hopefully be better in the conference tournament."
Since joining the league in 2013 the Mean Green have won a league record eight women's soccer conference titles. Three of those eight were won while current senior Olivia Klein played for UNT.Â
On Thursday, Klein put it all out on the field and finish the day with a career-high 13 shots, three more than the entire Owls team. In the 66th minute trailing 1-0, Klein crossed over the top of the 18-yard box and struck the ball into the bottom left corner out the reach of the Rice keeper for her fourth goal of the season. The with 36 seconds remaining in regulation, Klein took aim at goal bet struck the left post denied of a late last-second match winner on senior night.Â
Forty seconds into overtime, Klein hit the woodwork again being denied of a senior day fairy tell goal.Â
UNT put up four shots in overtime but couldn't convert a match-winner.Â
