WACO, Texas - The Mean Green tennis team battled but fell short in a road match at No. 17 Baylor on Friday evening.

Baylor won the match 6-1 over North Texas, but the Mean Green had several matches in contention throughout the evening.

The highlight of the night for the Mean Green (1-3) came in the night's final match when sophomore Kexuan Zhou battled back after dropping the first set to beat Sara Ziodato 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 4 singles match.

"We had a little bit of a slow start in doubles but we were able to claw back in singles and make it very competitive," head coach Sujay Lama said. "We put ourselves in a position to win four out of the six matches. Unfortunately, only Kexuan was able to close out her match."

Junior Lucie Devier also took her opponent to three sets before eventually falling 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 in the No. 1 singles match. Devier and Nidhi Surapaneni put up the best fight in the doubles competition, falling in their match 6-4. Surapaneni lost a nailbiter in the No. 2 singles match, falling 7-5, 7-6.

"Against these caliber of teams, we have to learn to stay focused and capitalize in those small windows of opportunities," Lama said. "The positive is that we are right there with them."

Up next

UNT will return to action on Wednesday when the Mean Green travel to Nacogdoches, Texas, to face Stephen F. Austin at noon.
