DENTON, Texas – Quincy Noble knocked down a huge 3-pointer with less than two minutes to play to will North Texas to a 72-64 win over Southern Miss Saturday inside The Super Pit to garner the Mean Green's eighth conference victory of the season.
The series sweep over Southern Miss (6-8, 4-8 C-USA) allowed North Texas (11-4, 8-2 C-USA) to tie for the most Conference USA victories in program history. The Mean Green also earned eight league victories in 2016-17 during head coach Jalie Mitchell's second season. Regardless of conference affiliation, the most league wins ever is 12, when UNT went 12-3 while in the Sun Belt during Mitchell's senior season in 2001-02 under head coach Tina Slinker.
Noble was just 2-of-12 from beyond the arc before hitting her dagger and finished with 16 points. N'Yah Boyd scored a season and game-high 22, while Madison Townley was the leader on the boards with 10 and assists with four.
"We had to really tough this one out," head coach Jalie Mitchell said. "We had to get some big stops, make some big shots and step to the line and convert. The second quarter was better than it had been the last couple games, but I think it was a slow start. I told our players at our walkthrough that Southern Miss is always better the second day. Thankfully, we've been in this situation before, and it ended up working out for us."
The Lady Eagles took a one-point advantage on a 3-pointer with 7:32 remaining in the contest. On three consecutive Southern Miss possessions, the Mean Green forced a turnover that resulted in layups by Boyd, Tommisha Lampkin and Jackson to put UNT up 58-53 midway through the fourth. Jackson dialed in from outside to increase the lead to 61-55, but Southern Miss stayed within four points until Noble sank her final shot.
The Mean Green travel to Western Kentucky for a pair of games Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 4 p.m.
