HUMBLE, Texas - The UNT women's golf team had a goal of moving up the leaderboard and finishing under par in Tuesday's final round at the ICON Invitational.
They accomplished both and have some new school records to show for it.
UNT fired a final-round, 8-under-par 280 to move up from 10th place to finish the tournament in sixth place at 1-over par. That 280 broke the previous record for best total round, which was previously set in the fall at the Schooner Fall Classic in Norman, Oklahoma (281). The performance also set a new 54-hole total standard at 865, breaking the previous mark of 866 from that same tournament. The 8-under score from Tuesday's final round also broke the program record of best round vs. par, which was previously at 5-under and had been done three times. The round of 8-under was also the second-best round of the day in the field, which featured 12 top-50 teams.
UNT was led on Tuesday by senior Lauren Cox and junior Katie Finley, who both shot 4-under 68s. For the three rounds, the Mean Green were paced by junior Audrey Tan, who finished tied for 10th at 4-under. Cox finished at 3-under and tied for 12th after her bogey-free round.
"I am thrilled with our final round today," UNT head coach Michael Akers said. "We beat some very good teams, and this will certainly help our national ranking and confidence. Katie barely made the lineup and then took the opportunity to help us go low today. Audrey had a very consistent tournament, and Lauren stepped up in the final round, as she typically does. We are excited to get to San Antonio and set our sights on a win."
The Mean Green return to action on March 9 and 10 at the Maryb S. Kauth Invitational at San Antonio Country Club.
