DENTON -- The Mean Green volleyball team dropped their Conference USA opener on Sunday after losing to UAB 2-3 (19-25, 25-16, 17-25, 25-16, 9-15) in a five-set thriller at the North Texas Volleyball Center.Â
After heading into the fourth set down 1-2, the Mean Green dominated the Blazers 25-16 to force a winner-take-all fifth set. During that fourth set, junior Sarah Haeussler and freshman Truli Levy teamed up for three crucial blocks. It was just a few highlights for the dominant right-side duo on Sunday.
Sarah Haeussler recorded her second consecutive 10-kill, five-block game and finished with an impressive .529 hitting percentage. Freshman Truli Levy had her best performance in her second appearance with North Texas, posting seven kills and six blocks.Â
"I'm excited about how Truli played," head coach Andrew Palileo said. "For a young kid that just got told in walkthrough that she's going to have to play, I thought she did a really good job."
North Texas jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the fifth set before the Blazers went on a 6-1 run to take a commanding four-point lead. UAB never relinquished the lead down the stretch, coming up with crucial kills to down the Mean Green in the C-USA opener.Â
"We came out a little slow," Palileo said. "Both teams were pretty even, and it was just a matter of who was going to execute the most down the stretch. They did a little bit better job than we did. We've got to find a way to play better in big moments and get better in those big moments. We're close, and we'll be able to turn it around."
In the second set, Kaliegh Skopal surpassed 1,000 career assists as a member of the Mean Green. The senior from Round Rock, Texas finished Sunday's match with 35 assists.Â
Rhett Robinson led all players with 18 kills, while Barbara Martin added a double-double with 13 kills and 10 digs. Sarah Haeussler recorded her second consecutive 10-kill, five-block game. Haeussler finished with an impressive .529 hitting percentage. Â
