DENTON - The North Texas women's golf team learned its NCAA Regional fate on Wednesday, when it was announced on the Golf Channel's NCAA Selection Show that they would be competing in the LSU Regional on May 10-12, at the University Club in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
"It was really cool to see North Texas pop up on the screen today with the 10th seed," UNT head coach Michael Akers said. "I was excited to see the teams we will be facing and know we can finish in the top-6. I met with the ladies today and reiterated that to them. We have played against this level of competition all year."
The Mean Green, ranked No. 38 in the GolfStat poll released Wednesday, earned the 10-seed in the regional, and will be joined by host and top-seeded LSU (No. 4 in latest Golfstat poll), No. 5 Ole Miss, No. 12 Baylor, No. 13 Oregon, No. 19 Maryland, No. 21 Alabama, No. 28 Oregon State, No. 31 Houston and 9-seed No. 36 Miami, as well as 11-seed No. 44 Purdue, No. 45 Mississippi State, Tulsa, Sam Houston State, Kennesaw State, East Tennessee State, Jacksonville State and to round out the field, 18-seed Quinnipiac.
This marks the second time in program history the Mean Green have made it to an NCAA Regional and it comes after the program's first-ever conference championship last week in Dade City, Florida.
"LSU was the perfect spot for us, as the grass will be the same we are used to," Akers said. "The weather will probably be similar to what we saw in Florida. We also will not have a time change like some of the other teams playing at Regionals. I am very excited to be chosen to the LSU Regional."
The top six teams from each regional will advance to the NCAA Championship in Scottsdale, Arizona, on May 21-26. Also, the top three individuals from non-advancing teams will advance to the NCAA Championship as individuals.
