ARLINGTON, Texas – North Texas track and field captured seven first place finishes, including all four throwing events, during day two of the UTA Invitational at Maverick Stadium.
Headlining the events was Jaleisa Shaffer where she increased her school record in shot put to 15.57 meters in her first-place finish. Others earning individual throwing honors were Haley Walker (discus, 46.52), Chris Samaniego (shot put, 16.68) and Karl Sralla (53.43). Over the two-day meet, the Mean Green throwing contingent swept all eight events.
The men's 4x100 relay crew of Antonio Delacruz, Davonye Jones, Jared Johnson and Karlington Anunagba clocked a time 39.94 seconds for the title. A late push by Laurynn Hogan in the 800-meter run propelled her to cross the finish line in 2:16.87 for first place, and Michael Gonzalez cleared 4.87 meters in pole vault for the top award.
"This was what we needed today because we had a chance for a lot of our young kids to get reps in races that they hopefully will be good at by the time we get to conference," director of track and field Carl Sheffield said.
"I feel like we're going to be ready to run fast in May in June. I'm just trying to be cautious, but we needed the men's relay to run a time today to post for the conference meet and try to qualify for the first round. We're just being very selective when we run when so that everybody has an opportunity. We're still limited as a team for outdoor conference roster spots, so every time we get an opportunity to run people, it helps us evaluate and decide on who's going to be in that that group of 28," Sheffield said.
