COLLEGE STATION, Texas – North Texas track and field will compete in nine events May 26-29 at the NCAA West Preliminaries hosted by Texas A&M at E.B. Cushing Stadium.
"Our team is excited to be participating in the NCAA Championships," director of track and field Carl Sheffield said. "For most of them, this is their first crack at trying to compete for a spot in Eugene. Competing in Conference USA is a great psychological boost for preparing for such a high caliber meet."
Events begin Wednesday with Zion Hill as the first Mean Green competitor in javelin at 1 p.m. while Michael Gonzalez performs in pole vault at 3. Karlington Anunagba and Davonye Jones begin the evening sprints with the 100-meter dash at 7, and Jones also runs in the 200 at 8:45.
North Texas is off Thursday and returns Friday beginning with Karl Sralla in the discus throw at 1:30 p.m. The men's 4x100-meter relay team opens the track events at 5:30 that night before Jack Beaumont takes the stage in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at 6:10. The men's 4x400 quad wraps up the day's competition at 9:15.
On Saturday, the women's 4x100-meter relay team is the lone UNT delegate with a 5:30 p.m. race.
"I hope our team can go and compete confidently and raise their own personal level of expectations to advance to the finals. We have a very good mix of upperclassmen and people that have been here before, so I think they are ready. The men's 4x100 team missed qualifying for the 2019 national finals by one spot - .01 seconds. They are definitely thinking about advancing. This is the time that we have been talking about all year. The time is now. We'll see how they step up," Sheffield said.
