DENTON - After a historic 2020-21 season ended with the program's first conference championship and first individual conference championship, followed by a win at the Let Them Play Classic after the Mean Green's NCAA tournament bid ended without a shot being hit at the Regional in Baton Rouge, UNT women's golf coach Michael Akers is putting his program in position for even more in 2021-22.
Â
Adding to incoming freshman Chandler Browning, Akers announced Friday the addition of Kansas transfer Ellie Roth, a DFW product from Plano West High School.
"We are excited to add Ellie Roth to our roster this fall," Akers said. "I have known her since she was a junior golfer. Ellie is an accomplished player and should continue to improve given the great players she will be surrounded by here at UNT."
Aside from being familiar with Roth's junior golf career, Akers also got to see her compete in three of the Mean Green's tournaments from last fall - at Oklahoma, Texas and Oklahoma State. In those three events, Roth's stroke average was a 76.6. She was also the 18th-ranked player in the recruiting class of 2020 and had a decorated junior golf career.
"Ellie played at the same three Big 12 events we did last fall so I was able to compare her scoring average versus our roster," Akers said. "There is no doubt she can contribute here, and I
am very happy for our team to gain even more depth."
The Mean Green return everyone from last year's squad except for Lauren Cox, who is the most decorated golfer in program history, but do have reigning Conference USA champion Audrey Tan and third-team all-conference selection Katie Finley, along with proven, strong depth from Patricia Sinolungan and Emilie Ricaud. They open the season at their new hosted event, the Sam Golden Invitational, at Robson Ranch's Wildhorse Golf Club on Sept. 13-14.
