
Volleyball Closes Invite with a Win

ARLINGTON – North Texas volleyball split the final day of the UTA Invite with a loss to Tulsa (22-25, 16-25, 23-25) and a win over UT Arlington (25-19, 25-21, 25-27, 25-19) Saturday inside College Park Center.
Tulsa 3, North Texas 0
Rhett Robinson produced a team-high 19 kills against Tulsa in the first match of the day, while Sarah Haeussler registered a match-high four blocks along with seven kills.
The Mean Green (4-2) opened the contest with two straight kills courtesy of Alysha Johnson and Robinson before Tulsa (2-1) went on an 11-1 run. UNT then rallied off seven points to close within one at 11-10 forcing the Golden Hurricanes to call a timeout. A kill by Haeussler put the Mean Green up 23-22, but back-to-back kills gave Tulsa the set one win.
A 6-0 run put North Texas ahead at 9-8, but that would be only lead obtained by the Mean Green in the second set as the Golden Hurricanes took the victory.
Kaliegh Skopal served up an ace to begin set three, and a Tulsa ball handling error knotted it at 20-all. A Robinson kill put UNT up, 22-21, but the Golden Hurricanes capped the match with a 4-1 run.

Robinson threw down 28 kills, one short of her career-high, and contributed a career-best 20 digs for her second double-double of the season. Haeussler tallied a season-high 10 blocks along with 11 kills for her first career double-double.
A Haeussler kill tied set one at 13-13 and began a 5-0 Mean Green run. A kill and ace from Robinson upped the lead to 22-16, and Haeussler closed things out with a kill for a 1-0 UNT match advantage.
Back-to-back aces by Skopal and a trio of UTA (0-6) attack errors handed North Texas a 12-8 lead in the second set. The Mavs jumped ahead 16-15, but the Mean Green rattled off eight straight and held off a late UTA rally.
The Mavs seemed in control in set three with a lead at 21-14, but UNT stormed back to tie things up at 23-23. UTA pieced together a late pair of kills to stay alive and force a fourth set.
North Texas found themselves down early in set four at 9-4 but came back to take an 18-17 edge. A solo block by Haeussler extended the margin to 23-19 before she teamed up with Kenzie Smith for another stuff and then completed the match on a kill.
The Mean Green host the North Texas Challenge Sept. 10-11 featuring Jackson State, Montana State and Abilene Christian.
