Women’s Tennis Wins Pair of Titles at SMU Red & Blue Challenge

Olivia Malm wins singles title, Zhou and Alogo PIqueras grabs doubles championship
DALLAS (Oct. 16, 2022) – The North Texas women's tennis team earned two titles to highlight a solid team performance over the weekend at the SMU Red & Blue Challenge.
The Mean Green started the tournament with Gloria Alogo Piqueras and Kexuan Zhou teaming up to take home one of three doubles titles as they posted a perfect 3-0 record. One day later, sophomore Olivia Malm was able to take home the singles title in the "Yellow Bracket" while also finishing the tournament 3-0.
"We had an extremely successful weekend that I believe has everything to do with the team being able to apply the mental skills we have been working on," assistant coach Rodrigo de Almeida said. "They all did an excellent job and fought hard each day. I'm proud of them and love seeing their development both on and off the courts. Now we initiate the next phase which is to get ready to finish the fall strong"
Overall, the Mean Green went 18-8 on the weekend as they posted a 6-3 record in doubles play and went 12-5 in singles.
The combination of Zhou and Alogo Piqueras started the weekend with back-to-back doubles wins on Friday, taking down Scherhamer and Schildcrout from Butler University 6-2 and pulling out a narrow 7-6 win over Casampere and Novika of UT Arlington. They then went on to defeat Dumitrescu and Reinertsen from UT Arlington to win the Green vs. Purple doubles title on Saturday.
Malm, meanwhile, won her first match on Friday over Fulgenzi of UIW in straight sets 6-3, 6-1 and followed it up with a 6-4, 6-2 win over UTSA's Mukhudinova to advance to Sunday's title match. In the championship, the sophomore transfer produced yet another win in straight sets, defeating Huth from SMU 6-4, 6-1.
The Mean Green also placed two other players into the final match of their respective brackets in Jasmine Adams and Olivia Halvorsen.
Adams opened the tournament with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Gorisek of UTA and grabbed a thrilling 7-5, 3-6, 10-5 win over SMU's Johnson to advance to Sunday's title match in the Blue Bracket. Playing in the Orange bracket, Halvorsen came from behind to take down Sears 4-6, 6-3, 11-9 in the opening round and won her semifinal contest over Mukhudinova from UTSA 6-4, 6-2.
The Mean Green started the competition strong on Friday with Adams and Malm teaming up for a 6-1 win in the Red doubles bracket over Zlatarava and Tuells of UTSA. Although they fell in the semifinal, Adams and Malm were able to bounce back in the consolation final with a 7-6 (4) win over Tsai and Martin from TCU.
Also on Friday, UNT got day one singles victories from Alogo Piqueras, Adams, Malm and Halvorsen who all advanced to their respective bracket semifinal.
On day two, the Mean Green went 3-0 in doubles play as Halvorsen and Matilde Morais combined to win 6-2 in addition to the UNT Green vs. Purple championship and the Red consolation final.
UNT then rounded out the competition with three singles wins as Alogo Piqueras and Morais both won their respective consolation bracket matches to end the tournament on a high note.
