UNT Running Away From The Field In New Orleans
2/14/2022 6:04:00 PM | Women's Golf
NEW ORLEANS - A trio of UNT women's golfers sits atop the leaderboard and the team has a sizeable lead heading into the final day of play at the Tulane Classic Presented by Chad Brownstein on Tuesday, as the Mean Green will look to hold on to a 23-shot lead over the nation's 10th-ranked team and secure their first tournament championship of the season at English Turn Golf & Country Club.Â
North Texas was the only team in the field to break par in Monday's second round, firing a 4-under-par 284 to put them at 8-over par for the tournament with second-place and No. 10 Michigan trailing behind at 31-over par. No. 34 Clemson is in third place at 33-over par.
Not only do the Mean Green have a comfortable lead on the team leaderboard, they also have three players tied for the lead at 1-over par - four shots clear of second place - as seniors Audrey Tan and Patricia Sinolungan and sophomore Ellie Roth are all tied after Tan and Sinolungan shot 3-under 69s on Monday and Roth shot a 1-under 71. Junior Emilie Ricaud is tied for 10th at 8-over par to give the team all of its counting scores in the top-10 of the leaderboard.
"I'm very proud of the way the ladies played the course and stuck to our game plan today," UNT head coach Michael Akers said. "We are right where we want to be heading into the final round. Tomorrow we will keep the same plan and play one shot at a time."
Tan finished the day with five birdies, including three in four holes down the closing stretch, while Sinolungan had four birdies and just one bogey on the day and birdied 18 to move into the first-place tie with her teammates. Roth carded seven birdies on the day and recovered from a double-bogey on 11 to birdie 13, 14 and 16 to get into the clubhouse atop the leaderboard. Roth is leading the field in Par 3 scoring and total birdies (10), while Sinolungan leads in Par 4 scoring and total pars (26).Â
UNT will be paired with No. 10 Michigan and No. 34 Clemson for Tuesday's final round and will begin teeing off from the first hole beginning at 9:20 a.m.
