Tennis Drops Decision to FIU at Home

DENTON – UNT Tennis fought until the very end against FIU falling 4-1 bringing their record to 8-3 on the season. Freshman Liisa Vehvilainen won in the fifth position 6-4 in both sets.

DOUBLES

Lucie Devier and Jasmine Adams put up a fight but fell 3-6 in doubles play.
Maria Ponomareva and Kexuan Zhou took an early lead but dropped their match 3-6.
Saki Oyama and Liisa Vehvilainen had an unfinished match left at 2-5.

SINGLES

Oyama struggled in her singles match falling 6-4 in both sets.
Ponomareva stumbled in the fourth position 6-4, 6-2.
Vehvilainen dominated the court winning 6-4 in both sets picking up the only Mean Green point of the match.
Devier fell 6-2 in her first set but bounced back in set two winning 6-3 forcing a dramatic third set. The senior from France fought until the very end but fell 4-6 closing out the match for the Panthers.
Adams earned an impressive 7-5 first-set win over No. 104 ranked Yasmine Kabbaj, but dropped set two 2-6. This forced a third set that was left unfinished at 4-4.
Zhou made quick work of set one with a 6-4 win but fell in set two 5-7. Her third set was left unfinished at 1-5.

QUOTABLE

"This was a terrific match against a very good team that was coming off a huge win against a top 20 team," head coach Sujay Lama said. "Great tennis from both teams. We left it all out on the court today and I am really proud of the way we battled till the very end. We gave ourselves a chance to win the match even after we lost the doubles point. We'll learn from this loss and work hard to improve from it."
