T&F Opens Outdoor Season With Home Dual Meet
3/11/2022 9:38:00 PM | Track & Field/XC
Mean Green will go head-to-head with UTA on Saturday.
DENTON, Texas – North Texas track & field will begin the 2022 outdoor season Saturday with the UNT vs. UTA Dual at home at the Soccer and Track & Field Stadium.
Â
"This is always a good time for us to kind of unpack the bags and see what our team's going to look like," director of track & field Carl Sheffield said. "We have people in places that we want to see them continue to develop in. We're still kind of in a training phase. We want to get a chance to see some of these younger kids do some things that they're more familiar with than they were out indoors. So, it'll be fun to see."
Â
The Mean Green men's team is coming off a sixth-place indoor conference finish, while the women look to build off a 13th-place finish at the indoor meet.
Â
UNT will feature 51 student-athletes at the outdoor opener, including 26 on the men's team and 25 on the women's side. Indoor all-conference performers Chris Samaniego, Victor Neiva, Alec Esposito and Samir Williams will all be in action for the men's team, while scoring runner Ayesha Nelson will be competing for the women's team.
Â
"I hope to continue to build the confidence of the younger group," Sheffield said. "As a freshman or a first year in Division I, it takes a little bit of getting used to competing at that higher level. So, hopefully their confidence will continue to build. Then our returners, it's just a chance to start getting the rust off and seeing how training is going from the time that we've been off."

Â
"It'll be fun," Sheffield said. "I think (UTA) is a similarly-built team as they have people in most of the same events that we do. It'll be neat to see, one-on-one, how well we do. At the end of the day, we'll count the score and see how it'll be. It'll be fun to compete."
Â
The Mean Green will compete at its first full outdoor meet next weekend (March 19) at the TCU Invitational.
