Chris Samaniego placed second in four separate competitions
DENTON, Texas – North Texas Track & Field recorded a combined 13 top-three finishes Thursday through Saturday between the UTA Under Armour Invitational, the ACU Oliver Jackson Twilight, and the Texas Tech Corky/Crofoot Shootout.
Â
"We took very positive steps towards preparing for the conference championships," director of track & field Carl Sheffield said. "I hate splitting the teams, but for what we needed to do it was worth it. The various competitions provided excellent opportunities for individual performances. Confidence at this point of the season is critical, so for them to continue to drop times and improve personal bests says a lot about where they are in the season."
Â
Chris Samaniego led the way for the Mean Green with four runner-up finishes. At the ACU meet, he placed second in the hammer throw with a mark of 185-06 (56.54m), and was the runner-up in the shot put with a throw of 53-01.00 (16.18m).
Â
At the Texas Tech meet, Samaniego bettered both of his marks from Abilene with a hammer throw of 190-6 (58.06m) and a shot put of 54-3.75 (16.55m) to place second in both events.
Â
Natasha Corkerton-Purchas had UNT's best performance of the UTA meet, recording a personal-best pole vault of 12-07.50 (3.85m) to finish as the runner-up.
Â
In the men's 5,000 meters at UTA, Mason Garner came through in third place with a time of 15:11.50.
Â
Skyler Guillot recorded a third-place finish in the women's javelin at the Corky/Crofoot Shootout with a throw of 133-8 (40.74m).
Â
In the women's 4x100-meter relay at the Texas Tech meet, the Mean Green's squad of Lyric Choice, Lauren Brown, Alika Crawford and Kayla McDonald finished in third place with a time of 46.81.
Â
UNT had three combined top-three finishes in the men's 100 meters and 200 meters, with Davonye Jones (21.20) and Karlington Anunagba (21.26) finishing 2-3 in the 200 and Samir Williams (10.44) placing third in the 100.
Â
Next up for the Mean Green is the Conference USA Outdoor Championships, which will take place May 12-15 at the Park West Athletics Complex in San Antonio.
Â
"We have approximately 10 days to rest, recover, and fine tune our training for Conference USA and the NCAA First Round Prelims," Sheffield said. "I feel like we are all looking forward to big things in the month of May."
