Concludes 23-year career at North Texas
DENTON, Texas – UNT Director of Track & Field Carl Sheffield is retiring at the conclusion of the 2022 season after 23 years as a member of the Mean Green staff, the veteran coach announced Tuesday.
Â
"My family and I have certainly enjoyed our time in Denton," Sheffield said. "I have been fortunate to work with many talented student-athletes and coaches during this time, and I thank them for their hard work and dedication to our track and field program over the years. A special thank you to coach Ken Garland for bringing me to North Texas all those years ago. I also want to thank Wren Baker and Rick Villarreal for the opportunity they gave me to lead this great program.
Â
"I will always look back on my time at North Texas with great fondness, but all good things must come to an end. I am excited to spend more time with my family and look forward to what God has planned for me next."
Â
Sheffield led the Mean Green men's and women's track and field programs since September 2011. He previously served as an assistant coach from 1996-2007.
Â
"I want to thank Coach Sheffield for his contributions to our track and field program over the last 23 years," Vice President and Director of Athletics Wren Baker said. "We believe with our top-notch university, talent-rich location, and strong facilities there will be a tremendous amount of interest in this position. We look forward to finding the next coach that will help us Build Champions and Prepare Leaders."
Â
Under Sheffield, UNT won 41 individual conference championships, two conference championships and two runner-up titles. The women's outdoor program won back-to-back titles in 2012 and 2013, while the women's indoor team picked up second-place honors in 2012 and 2013.
Â
A native of Dallas, Sheffield also spent time at LSU and the Michael Johnson Training Center during his coaching career that began in 1988.
Â
A national search for Sheffield's replacement will begin immediately.
