DENTON, Texas – The No. 187 junior player in the world, Matilde Morais, signed with North Texas women's tennis, head coach Sujay Lama announced Wednesday. A Portugal native, Morais, is the fourth signee for the Mean Green heading into 2022-23.
"There was an instant connection when I spoke with coach Sujay and coach Rodrigo for the first time", Morais said. "North Texas felt like a place where I can be the best version of myself on and off the court. UNT is the best place for me to grow as a person and as an athlete. North Texas is where I believe I can achieve my athletic and academic goals. I am looking forward to helping the team win conference championships and make it to the NCAA's."
Morais, who was selected to represent Portugal at the European Youth Olympic in 2019, recorded a career-high UTR of 10.05 and already has a WTA ranking. She won eight ITF junior doubles titles and one ITF junior singles title. She was also a member of the Portuguese Junior National Team in the winter and summer European Championships for all age groups. She also owns a career-high ITF ranking of 180.
QUOTING HEAD COACH SUJAY LAMA
"Matilde is an outstanding student-athlete who has excelled at the highest level both in school and tennis. What stood out most in her recruitment process was the clarity and focus she has with her goals not just for herself but also for the team. She has a great personality and is a perfect fit for the culture we have. We are delighted to welcome her to our Mean Green family."
