Sophomore Leads Way On Final Day in Bryan

BRYAN, Texas - North Texas sophomore Sakura Sugiyama followed up her solid, even-par second round Tuesday afternoon with an even better one on Wednesday morning to conclude play at the Texas A&M Mo'Morial at Traditions Golf Club.
Sugiyama, who made the team lineup for the first time since February, entered the day tied for 36th but shot a 1-under 71 to finish the event in a tie for 22nd and earn top finisher honors for the Mean Green in a field largely comprised of Power 5 programs.
"I am very excited for and proud of Sakura," UNT head coach Michael Akers said. "She is extremely coachable and communicative. We have put a lot of time and energy into her as she puts in the work and is extremely detail oriented. She reminds me of Audrey (Tan) a few years ago, and she will end up being a star."
The Mean Green finished the event in 10th place and ahead of both Conference USA foes in the field, as they had two other top-40 finishers in fifth-year graduate students Audrey Tan and Patricia Sinolungan, who finished tied for 33rd and 37th, respectively.
"Obviously, I am disappointed with our final round today," Akers said. "It is very rare that we have three players falter in the same round, but it is golf and that does happen."
UNT will quickly hit the road again to play in the Schooner Fall Classic, which begins Saturday and runs through Monday in Norman, Oklahoma.
"Golf is a game in which good players have a short memory," Akers said. "We head up to Oklahoma tomorrow so we will forget this round and move on to the next."
