
North Texas Volleyball Sweeps Again

DENTON, Texas – North Texas volleyball picked up its fourth sweep of the season defeating Texas Southern 3-0 (25-11, 25-7, 25-14) at the North Texas Volleyball Center on Tuesday.
As a team, the Mean Green recorded a season-high .337 attack percentage while allowing a season-low 14 kills. Five players recorded at least five kills, led by Treyaunna Rush with 10 followed by Truli Levy (9), Andrea Owens (8), Sh'Diamond Holly (7) and Aryn Johnson (5).
Holly also added five blocks to lead the team with 10.5 points. This is the fifth match of the season in which she has recorded at least five blocks. Ceci Harness tallied 16 assists with Lauren Phillips contributing 13 on the night. Aleeyah Galdeira added 13 digs to her resume, leaving her only eight short of the century mark in her career.
Set 1: UNT began the match on a 6-2 scoring run with the first four points coming from opposite hitter Rush. Despite TSU answering back, North Texas overwhelmed the opposition going on a 10-1 binge which featured three kills from Holly to give the team a 19-7 advantage. The set would conclude with a 6-2 run to finish 25-11.
Set 2: In the second, the home side continued to control the match, jumping out to a 6-1 lead with contributions from Owens, Rush and Holly. Midway through the set, Johnson dropped a kill off of a Phillips assist to give her team a 9-4 lead and herself a chance at the service line. She would serve ten straight points while accumulating three aces to put her team up 18-4. The Mean Green would finish the second on a 7-1 tear which was punctuated with an ace from Harness.
Set 3: The final set proved to be the most competitive of the evening with the visitors forcing the first tie of the match early in the frame. UNT gained its footing and grabbed a 4-0 rally to give themselves some breathing room at 6-2. The Tigers did not give in but an 8-0 scoring wave halfway through proved insurmountable with the Mean Green finishing the match with a 25-14 third set.
Up Next: UNT will take its furthest trip of the season, traveling to Corvallis, Ore. for the Asics Invitational on Sept. 9-10. North Texas will open the tournament with a doubleheader on Friday, Sept. 9. The first match will be against host Oregon State at noon CT on Pac-12 Plus with the second versus Portland at 7 p.m. CT.
