Mean Green had three of the top nine in the women’s shot put final.
DENTON, Texas – KeAyla Dove set the school record in the women's shot put to highlight North Texas Track & Field Friday in the indoor season opener at the Arkansas Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark.
"Today definitely showed us where we are at and what we need to work on moving forward," head coach Doug Marshall said. "I think this is a group with a lot of potential and tons of room for growth. We have a long ways to go to be the team we need to be, but I was happy to get out injury free."Â
Dove, a sophomore transfer from Sam Houston State, took down Jaleisa Shaffer's school record of 50-10.25 (set at the 2020 C-USA Indoor Championships) on her very first throw for the Mean Green and didn't look back. Dove surpassed the previous record on each of her six throws, with her second throw of 54-8 (16.66m) proving to be the new school mark. The Houston, Texas, native finished as the runner-up with her performance.
"I'm very proud of Ke and her performance today," Marshall said. "She was very consistent, and I know that's something she and Coach Tipton have been working towards. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing how she continues to progress throughout the year."
Â
Shaffer and Macayla Needham also made the final of the women's shot put, placing sixth and ninth, respectively. Shaffer recorded a mark of 48-11.5 (14.92m), while Needham registered a throw of 45-11.75 (14.01m).
Â
In her UNT debut, Nazah Reddick placed fourth in the women's high jump with a mark of 5-7 (1.70m). Kennedy Adams took fifth in the women's triple jump with a mark of 38-11.75 (11.88m), and Shaffer placed eighth in the women's weight throw with a mark of 54-8 (16.66m).
Â
Next up for the Mean Green is the Red Raider Open next Friday (Jan. 20) in Lubbock, Texas.
Â
The initial USTFCCCA NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Regional TFRI rankings are set to release Jan. 23, while the national rankings will come out on Jan. 24.
