Mean Green set program record with three points allowed in second quarter
DENTON, Texas (Jan. 16, 2023) – Fueled by a tenacious defensive effort that saw North Texas allowed just three points in the second quarter and only 45 in the game, UNT earned back-to-back wins for the first time this season with a 71-45 victory over FIU Monday afternoon inside the Super Pit.
Just two days after posting its largest deficit of the season against FAU, the Mean Green followed it up in a big way with a 26-point victory over the Panthers.
The three points allowed by the Mean Green in the second quarter are the least for a Division I opponent since the NCAA changes from halves to quarters prior to the 2015-16 season.
Aniyah Johnson led the way for a balanced UNT offense with 14 points and nine boards, narrowly missing out on her second career double-double. Quincy Noble also scored in double figures with 10 points while 10 of the 11 players who saw action in the contest scored at least two points.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Mean Green held the Panthers to just 25.9 percent from the floor and 19.0 percent from 3-point range. The 45 points for FIU was the least allowed by UNT since giving up 45 against FAU on Feb. 17, 2022.
After trading baskets early in the first quarter, UNT turned up the defensive intensity and used a 7-0 run to take a 14-7 lead with 3:20 left to play in the frame.
The lead swelled to as many as 13 in the second quarter as the Mean Green allowed just one made FG in the period and got a 3-pointer from Jaaucklyn Moore to take a 26-13 lead into the break.
In total, the Mean Green outscored the Panthers 19-6 from the 6:00 minute mark in the first quarter to halftime.
The third quarter started similarly with UNT scoring six straight points to start to increase the run to 25-6 swell the lead to 32-13.
FIU was able to cut the deficit back down to 13 with a 6-0 run of their own and found themselves trailing 47-33 through three quarters.
UNT made sure to stop the comeback in its tracks by scoring 10 of the first 12 points in the fourth quarter, highlighted by four points each from Johnson and Noble.
On top 57-37, the Mean Green grew the lead to their largest of the game at 28 after Grace Abercrombie scored her first five points at UNT and Breanna Davis knocked down a layup.
The Panthers hit a basket down the stretch to make the final score 71-45 and the Mean Green secured the 26-point win.
As a team, UNT forced 29 FIU turnovers in the game and posted a season-high 16 steals in the win. Jordyn Carter, Jaaucklyn Moore and Noble all posted four steals to lead the team.
Quoting Coach Mitchell
"Finally got that elusive second win in a row. I'm proud of us for not only doing that, but understanding and executing the how. We got it done on the defensive end. Our energy is contagious on that end of the floor. We got our hands on a lot of balls and that really makes a difference and we feed off of each other as a team."
