SAN ANTONIO (Jan. 26, 2023) – Led by 16 points from Quincy Noble and a strong defensive effort throughout, UNT went on the road and took down UTSA 54-51 Thursday night inside the Convocation Center.
The Mean Green held the Roadrunners to just 30.2 percent from the floor to earn their first C-USA road win of the season and improve to 7-13 overall and 4-6 in conference play.
Noble finished the game with 16 points and six rebounds while Kendall McGruder chipped in 10 points.
UNT started the game off hot with a 9-2 run capped off by a 3-pointer from Noble to take the early lead.
After UTSA cut the deficit back down to four at 11-7, Tommisha Lampkin knocked down a free throw and Noble hit a layup at the buzzer to give the Mean Green a 15-7 edge at the end of the first.
Trailing 17-9, the Roadrunners rallied in the second with a 10-2 run to tie the contest at 19 apiece.
The Mean Green closed the second quarter strong as Kendall McGruder and Ereauna Hardaway hit back-to-back buckets to give UNT a 25-21 lead at the break.
On top 35-30, UNT swelled the lead to nine as Jordyn Carter knocked down a layup to make the score 39-30.
To start the fourth quarter, McGruder knocked down a 3-pointer from NBA range to push the lead to 42-32, the largest of the night for the Mean Green.
From that point, UTSA began to mount a comeback with a 14-4 run that knotted the game at 46 with 5:08 left to play.
Down the stretch, Lampkin hit a pair of big layups in the post and Hardaway added another to put UNT on top 52-48 at the two-minute mark.
With 1:29 left to and the Mean Green up by three, Noble drove down the lane and hit a floater to push the lead to five at 54-49.
From there, the UNT defense stiffened and did not allow another field goal in the final minute of the contest to seal the three-point win.
The Mean Green did not trail in the contest as they dropped the Roadrunners to 4-15 overall and 2-8 in C-USA play.
Quoting Coach Mitchell
"That felt great. Ugly, pretty, it doesn't matter how we get it as long as we get it done. Even when some things didn't go our way, we got it done. I thought that last stop was huge and a much needed defensive lockdown. Everyone was on the same page and made it happen."
