Soccer's Season Ends With 3-1 Loss

DENTON — The UNT soccer team's 2023 season came to an end Thursday night at the Mean Green Soccer and Track & Field Complex with a 3-1 loss to SMU.
Needing a win or a tie over the Mustangs to qualify for the eight-team conference tournament, the Mean Green conceded a sixth-minute goal to put themselves in a early hole and then a 71st minute goal that was a back breaker.
Fifth-year senior Jenna Sheely scored North Texas' (8-5-3, 2-4-3) goal in 70th minute. She intercepted a SMU (9-5-1, 5-3-1) pass and then ripped a shot from outside the box that deflected off a Mustang defender and into the corner of the net. It was Sheely's eighth goal of the year, which means she ends the season as the team leader. The Austin native doubled her previous single-season career high.
UNT had plenty of other scoring opportunities but couldn't find the back of the net Thursday. They finished with 15 shots on the night and took seven corner kicks.
