Mean Green extend win streak to five games
DENTON, Texas – The UNT women's basketball team overcame a nine-point halftime deficit to defeat Pepperdine, 74-57, inside The Super Pit on Friday night.
Pepperdine started the game efficiently with a mark of 48% from the field in the first half, while building up an 11-point lead in the second quarter and taking a 46-37 lead into halftime.
Coming out of the break, UNT turned up the tempo and erased the deficit by the end of the third quarter. An 8-0 stretch in the third quarter was highlighted by a 3-pointer from Breanna Davis that tied the game at 43.
From there, it was all North Texas who extended its win streak to five games and improved to 7-1 on the season. The Mean Green outscored Pepperdine 47-21 in the second half en route to the 17-point victory.
Tommisha Lampkin led the way with 28 points on 11-15 shooting and added five rebounds. The senior came one point shy of tying a career high of 29 she set last season against UTEP. After posting 10 points in the first 20 minutes of action, Lampkin scored 10 in the third quarter alone and finished with 18 in the second half.
DesiRay Kernal and Dyani Robinson also reached double figures for the Mean Green. Kernal scored a season-high 21 points and finished with nine rebounds, one short of collecting her fourth double-double of the season. Robinson posted a 12-point performance and dished out three assists.
Despite a limited scoring output, Desiree Wooten and Davis played a big role on the defensive end of the court. UNT forced 27 turnovers on the night, including 17 in the second half to spark the comeback.
North Texas will be back in The Super Pit to face Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Dec. 6 at 11 a.m. CT.
Quoting Head Coach Jason Burton
Thoughts on the game:
"I thought we showed some resiliency because in the first half we didn't come to play like we're capable of playing. It's almost like we were comfortable and like we thought it was going to be an easy win. We should've come out and pressured the basketball like we were supposed to do. They were better in the first half in every phase. We showed a lot in the second half with the way we bounced back."
TICKETS
UNT's next home game against UAPB on Dec. 6 will not require tickets for admission. Season tickets and future single game tickets are still on sale at www.meangreentickets.com.
