Mean Green fall to 10-3 overall and 0-1 in AAC play
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A second-quarter outburst propelled Charlotte to a 74-64 victory over the UNT women's basketball team as the Mean Green fell to 10-3 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
A 21-12 first-quarter lead for North Texas would quickly be erased by the 49ers. Charlotte went on a 20-2 run to start the second quarter and turned a 23-7 advantage in the quarter into a nine-point halftime lead. Charlotte's leading scorer Dazia Lawrence outscored the Mean Green by herself with 12 of her 23 points coming in the second.
The Mean Green's seven points in the second quarter was the lowest point total in any quarter this season. On top of that, UNT turned the ball over 14 times in the first half leading to 17 points off turnovers for the 49ers.
The Mean Green played a cleaner second half cutting the deficit to as low as three points with seven seconds left in the third quarter. However, struggles from the free throw line ailed North Texas down the stretch as the team shot 46% from the line for the game.
Tommisha Lampkin led the Mean Green with 16 points on 8-of-9 shooting. Her 88.9% from the field is tied for the sixth highest single-game percentage in program history.
Shamaryah Duncan and Jaaucklyn Moore each added 11 points, while Ereauna Hardaway contributed seven assists and drew multiple charges in her first game back in the starting lineup since December 6.
Having dropped consecutive games for the first time this season, North Texas will look to bounce back on Tuesday when it continues its road trip to start conference play at Temple.
Quoting Head Coach Jason Burton
Thoughts on the game:
"We came out and did exactly what we wanted to do offensively to the point they went zone exclusively after that. In the second quarter, we didn't respond like we needed to respond when they went on their run, but we had plenty of opportunities to close the gap. We went on a run in the third quarter and I thought we came out and played our style of basketball. You go from a half where you shoot six free throws in the first half to 20 free throws in the second half, but shoot 46% from the free throw line."
