Mean Green add the No. 2 ranked junior player in Brazil
DENTON, Texas (May 18, 2023) – The UNT women's tennis program added another strong component to its 2023 signing class Thursday as Carolina Laydner, the No. 2 ranked junior player in Brazil, has inked with the Mean Green.
Laydner, who has been ranked as high as 143rd in the world in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Junior rankings, becomes the third member of an already impressive group of 2023 signees for UNT.
"We had been following Carolina's development for a long time and from our first conversation the connection was there," head coach Sujay Lama said. "Her values are aligned with ours and our player-centered culture along with her desire to continue to improve makes this the perfect fit. Carolina brings a lot of experience having traveled the world playing ITF tournaments including playing in the main draw of the Australian Open Juniors this year. She has also represented her country in different events and that certainly strengths her ability to compete for her team at a high level. We are very excited to welcome Carolina to our Mean Green family."
Laydner has played in and won a number of big-time tournaments throughout her amateur career, including playing in the main draw singles of the Australian Junior Open. In total, she has won a pair of singles titles and three doubles titles throughout her ITF Junior career.
Also a perennial member of the Brazilian Junior National team, Laydner has posted 60 wins at the ITF junior level and appears in both the singles and doubles Women's Tennis Association (WTA) rankings.
Laydner joins Stanislava Shulzhenko and Lilly Schultz as the third international standout to sign with UNT and is excited for the future of Mean Green tennis.
"I chose UNT because I felt the passion and effort that the team puts in on and off the court," Laydner said. "I can't wait to be a part of that culture."
