DENTON – The UNT cross country teams will make their return to competition after nearly a month hiatus at the Arturo Barrios Invitational hosted by Texas A&M University on Friday.
The last time the Mean Green raced was Sept. 20 at the Roy Griak Invitational where Ximena Lopez de Escalera led the women with a 36th-place finish and Connor Bartek placed 39th to pace the men. The women claimed 14th place a team while the men's squad logged a 15th-place finish in the team standings.
Friday's meet will consist of a solid field of 40 teams competing alongside North Texas. Seven teams ranked inside the top 10 of the USTFCCCA's South Central Regional rankings will be in the field on the men's side, while six teams on the women's side will race against UNT.
The meet will begin with the men's 8K at 8:30 a.m. CT. UNT will have 11 men running in the race, led by Victor Neiva and Bartek. Last season, Neiva broke the 24-minute mark for the first time in his career to place 15th at the Arturo Barrios. His time of 23:41.3 was a personal best in the 8K at the time and currently sits as the third-fastest time in school history.
On the women's side, 10 of the 12 ladies who have appeared at a meet this season will run on Friday. The women's 6K is set to begin at 9:15 a.m. CT following the conclusion of the men's race.
It will be the second time running on the Watts Cross Country this season for many of UNT's athletes who competed at the Texas A&M Invitational on Sept. 13. North Texas has become a consistent visitor to College Station as the program will be making its sixth appearance at the Arturo Barrios Invitational, only missing the meet during the shortened 2020 season.
The Arturo Barrios is the final regular season meet of the season for UNT with the AAC Championships looming on Nov. 2. The NCAA South Central Regional will bring North Texas back to the Watts Cross Country course for the third time this season Nov. 15.
