SAN MARCOS, Texas - The UNT women's golf wrapped up the fall season on Monday by closing out play with its best round of the season at the Jim West Challenge.
The Mean Green shot a 3-under 285 to close out the fall season on a positive note en route to a ninth-place finish at the tournament that was started by head coach Michael Akers when he was at Texas State.
UNT finished one shot back of eighth place in a field that featured five top-50 teams, as the Mean Green were led by senior Malisone Chanthapanya, who finished tied for 18th at 2-under after a final-round 72. Junior Mason Lewis finished tied for 27th at even-par after a 72 of her own on Monday. Sophomores Bouquet Subsomboon and Katharina Anglett led the way on Monday, as both broke par with a 70 and 71, respectively.
"We had a great experience at the Jim West this week," Akers said. "It was special for me to see my efforts continue to influence college golf. We finished the event with our low round of the year, which is a good boost heading into the offseason. We were shorthanded this fall, but I am working tirelessly to add a player for the spring."
Senior Shreya Pal, one of the team leaders, had to withdraw from the team's last event with an injury and will be out until the team returns for the spring season, but Akers said her return will also be a boost, and he feels strongly about his team's chances in the American Athletic Conference.
"In looking at our conference opponents, overall, I feel good about chances to win the AAC in April," Akers said. "But my goals are much higher than that."
The Mean Green will resume the season with a match against Houston at the Golf Club of Houston on Jan. 19, before returning to tournament play at the Puerto Rico Classic on Feb. 2-4.
