Mean Green bounce back after tough opening day of play
HOUSTON – After dropping both singles matches and the lone doubles match of the tournament to bow out of the main draw on the opening day, the UNT tennis team was able to bounce back with a solid second day to highlight play at the inaugural AAC Fall Championship.
The Mean Green went 4-4 overall in singles play and 1-1 in doubles after starting things off 0-3 across all matches. Stanislava Shulzhenko led the way in singles play, advancing to the semifinal of the consolation bracket.
"This was an interesting weekend. There were some big lessons to take away from our opening rounds," head coach Amanda Stone said. "We had some disappointment there in not giving ourselves a chance in doubles and not stepping up and putting away our opponents when we had the edge in singles. We asked some hard questions and were able to rebound in a big way on day two. I'm really proud of the steps we took mentally in this short time and the determination we showed to pick ourselves up and battle back. Ultimately, we walked away knowing what type of players we want to be and what it's going to take to get there."
In singles play, both Lou Chalard and Stanislava Shulzhenko dropped their opening match of the tournament.
Chalard, who held the lead in both sets of her first match, fell 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 against Ines Bachir of East Carolina. Shulzhenko, meanwhile, took her match to a third set but ultimately fell against Melissa Senli of USF 7-6 (8-4), 4-6, 7-5.
Both Chalard and Shulzhenko did a good job of responding on day two, both winning their first-round match of the consolation bracket.
Chalard took down USF's Sienna Leeson in a thriller 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 while Shulzenko took home a straight sets 7-6, 6-1 win over Xenia Jeromin of East Carolina.
Shulzhenko was able to advance one step further, defeating Micah Pierce of Tulane in resounding fashion 6-2, 6-1 to advance to the semifinal of the consolation bracket, where she ultimately fell against Tulsa's Lily Hutchings 6-2, 6-4.
Stadfany Nformi and Lilly Schultz competed in doubles for the Mean Green but dropped their opening round matchup against Ines Bacher and Xenia Jeromin of East Carolina 8-3 to bow out of the competition.
Nformi and Schultz were able to pick up a victory on the weekend, however, defeating Charlotte's Sara Suchankova and Amira Badawi 6-4 in an exhibition matchup.
The Mean Green will return to action for the final time this fall as a team Nov. 1-3 in Tulsa for the Hurricane Invite.
