DENTON, Texas – The UNT cross country teams return to action Friday morning at the NCAA South Central Regional at the Watts Cross Country Course in College Station, Texas.
The meet will begin with the women's 6K at 9 a.m. CT, followed by the men's 10K an hour later with NCAA Championships qualification on the line. The top two teams from a stacked field and first four finishers in the race not associated with those two teams will advance to the NCAA Championships on Nov. 23 in Madison, Wisconsin.
UNT senior Victor Neiva has been able to secure one of the first four finisher spots in the last two regional meets, placing 10th in 2022 and 2023, to clinch berths at the NCAA Championships. After an eighth-place finish at the AAC Championships his last time out, Neiva will once again attempt to qualify for the national meet and earn the fourth all-region honor of his career.
Neiva will be joined on the starting line by a group of runners making their first appearances at the NCAA South Central Regional. The squad consists of freshmen Joseph Wienen, Matthew Montgomery, Nolan House and Hunter Hendry, in addition to sophomores Iain Salter and Connor Bartek.
The Mean Green women will look to improve upon last year's 16th-place finish that marked the highest finish at an NCAA Regional since 2018. Trinity Trotter led the group last season with a 55th-place finish and has been one of the top four for the ladies this season. Trotter, Betty Bajika, Ximena Lopez de Escalera and London Culbreath have each put their stamp on the program record book in the 6K this season.
Destiny Hernandez, Tiblets Abreha, Amy Pritchard and Brenna Zerby will also make the trip to College Station for Friday's meet.
