Volleyball Shocks Wichita State in Five

UNT claims first five-set win of the season
DENTON, Texas – Mean Green volleyball collected a 3-2 win over Wichita State on Friday night at the UNT Volleyball Center.
Needing back-to-back wins for a chance to make the American Athletic Conference Championship, UNT head coach Kristee Porter knew that her team understood the challenge before them.
"Tonight was do-or-die for us and I thought [the team] came out with the right focus," Porter said. "Wichita State is always tough … so to come and get this win on our home court, I thought we played a phenomenal match and I'm really proud of our players."
UNT (9-17, 6-9) claimed its first five-set win (22-25, 25-23, 26-24, 13-25, 15-9) of the season to topple the Shockers (15-12, 10-5) on Friday. The Mean Green posted a season-high 70 kills with four players reaching double-digits.
Senior Aryn Johnson led the attack with 19 kills on 37 attacks and reached her season-best mark of 24 points. She added 11 digs for her fifth double-double of the season.
"We came together tonight, and we played for each other," Johnson said. "That's what we've been preaching all season so to see it finally come all together, in this crucial point of the season, was really exciting."
Senior Coco Gillett posted her sixth double-double of the season as she finished with 14 kills and 10 digs for the night while setter Kamryn Scroggins totaled 37 assists.
In her second career start, redshirt sophomore Loredana Fouonji set new career highs with 10 kills, 15 attacks and 11 points as she added two blocks.
Based on current tie-breaker scenarios, the Mean Green sit in 10th place in the conference standings. Memphis, Tulane and UAB hold the edge over UNT despite all four teams holding a league record of 6-9 after Friday's results.
