UNT improved to 1-0 in conference play for the first time since 2020-21
WICHITA, Kan. – The UNT women's basketball team overcame a late rally from Wichita State to win its conference opener, 62-56, Sunday afternoon inside Charles Koch Arena.
The Mean Green improved to 9-4 overall on the season and 1-0 in the American Athletic Conference, winning their first conference game for the first time since the 2020-21 season.
"You have to find a way to win, especially on the road and we did that," head coach Jason Burton said. "It took us having such a strong start to this game. I loved how we came out and I thought we did a good job of withstanding their runs. It feels good to get a win on the road and start the conference slate 1-0."
North Texas came out firing building a 14-point lead in the first half, behind a variety of scorers and stout defense that held Wichita State to 24% from the field in the half. UNTclosed the second quarter on a 15-3 run, holding the Shockers to one basket over the final 7:53 of the quarter to take a 37-23 lead into halftime.
UNT's lead would evaporate in the second half as Wichita State battled back, cutting the lead to one at the halfway point in the fourth quarter. A Jaelyn Talley putback and layup on consecutive possessions gave North Texas a 52-47 cushion to start an 11-2 run that sealed the game.
Desiree Wooten and Ereauna Hardaway led North Texas in scoring with 12 points apiece. Wooten added a career-high eight rebounds and six assists, while Hardaway tied her career high with seven rebounds for the second consecutive game.
Tommisha Lampkin also finished in double figures with 11 points and 14 rebounds. It marks her 24th career double double, which is the fifth most in program history. The senior made more history on Sunday, taking over sole possession of third place on the career rebounds list with 718, passing Talicia Sanders and Empress Drane.
North Texas will return to Denton to host Tulsa on Wednesday, Jan. 1 at 4 p.m. CT as it opens the 2025 calendar year with its first home game of the league slate.
