North Texas finishes the season with 12 dual wins, the most since 2019
DALLAS – The UNT tennis team closed its strong season under first-year head coach Amanda Stone Thursday as it fell 4-1 against USF in the second round of the American Athletic Conference Championship at Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex.
The Mean Green started the day by winning the doubles point but could not grab a win in singles play as they finish the year 12-13 overall. The 12 victories for UNT is the most for a North Texas team since 2019 and the most under a first-year head coach since the 1984-85 season.
"We fought hard today and left it all out on the court, and I'm proud of that," head coach Amanda Stone said. "We played probably the best doubles we've played all year on all the lines. This team has a lot to be proud of from this season. We are probably the youngest team in the conference playing with three sophomores and four freshman. They are incredible fighters and have laid a strong foundation for us to continue to grow and elevate. The future is bright for the Mean Green."
In doubles play, the Mean Green continued the dominant play they displayed all season, winning the doubles point for the 17th time in 25 matches this season.
At line one, Stanislava Shulzhenko and Olivia Malm picked up a 6-4 victory. The duo improved to 6-5 as a tandem this season and won both of their matches in the AAC Championship.
Moments later, North Texas won the doubles point when Marina Adati and Lou Chalard picked up a 6-2 victory at line three. Adati and Chalard finished the year winning three of their last four doubles matches of the season, including two in the AAC Championship.
In singles play, Shulzhenko was on the verge of grabbing a win before the match was decided as she was on top 6-3, 5-5 at line three.
Carolina Laydner was also leading her match, winning the first set 7-6 (7-3) and on top 1-0 in the second.
UNT is expected to return every player from its 2023-24 roster for the 2024-25 season. The Mean Green closed the year with four players recording double-digit victories in dual play this season.
