Pielet becomes first UNT player selected to event since Maria Kononova in 2018
CARY, N.C. – UNT junior Gianna Pielet was selected to attend pre-qualifying at the ITA All-American Championships Sept. 21-29 in Cary, N.C., the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced earlier this week.
Pielet becomes the first UNT player to be invited to the prestigious event since four-time all-conference selection Maria Kononova earned the honor in 2018.
"We are so proud to have Gianna representing Mean Green tennis at the All-American Championships," head coach Amanda Stone said. "This is an elite event with a tough selection process and G's body of work measures up. It's testament to the strong direction our program is moving and the work our players have put in to have a player like Gianna coming in with the resume to compete at this level. Hopefully this is just the first of many opportunities to showcase Mean Green tennis on a national level.
The championships will begin with 128 players starting with the pre-qualifying round on Saturday, Sept. 21. The event will then get whittled down to 64 players that will be re-seeded to the main draw bracket.
From the main draw, 10 singles players will qualify for the NCAA singles championship.
A transfer from Texas A&M, Pielet starts her career at North Texas with an impressive 24-9 singles record in dual matches in her career. She has been ranked as high as the #79 singles player in the ITA rankings in November of 2023. Overall, Pielet was 40-19 in singles play in her career across three seasons with the defending national champion Aggies.
Since 1983, the ITA Women's All-American Championships have featured the nation's top NCAA Division I players and have been a pioneer in women's college tennis. In addition, the event has created milestones that have directly influenced the popularity of women's collegiate tennis over the years.
The rest of the squad for UNT is set to open its fall season on Sept. 20 in the Mean Green Invite at Waranch Tennis Complex.
