DENTON – The Mean Green more than doubled up SFA in total yardage and improved to 2-0 on the young season with a 35-20 win on Saturday at DATCU Stadium in UNT's home opener.
Junior quarterback Chandler Morris threw for 322 yards and a career-high four touchdown passes and shook off three interceptions to lead UNT to the win, along with junior wideout DT Sheffield, who had six catches for 74 yards and three touchdowns – all in the first half.
Sheffield entered the night without a touchdown in his FBS career but that changed just more than five minutes into the night when he hauled in a 51-yard touchdown pass. A little more than four minutes later, he had a 2-yard touchdown reception and then in the closing seconds of the first half had a 28-yard touchdown.
The Mean Green (2-0) dealt with several injuries in the game, including a pair of injuries that ended the nights of two starting offensive linemen, but still were able to manage several big plays and filled the stat sheet.
Junior running back Damashja Harris broke off an 80-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter on his way to 142 yards on just 10 carries in his first career 100-yard rushing effort.
While the offense put up stats for a second straight game and eclipsed 500 yards of total offense for the ninth time in 14 games under head coach Eric Morris, UNT's defense also had some big moments and was able to overcome four UNT turnovers on the night.
The Mean Green, led by linebackers Jordan Brown and Jaylen Smith and defensive backs Evan Jackson and Jayden Hill, allowed just 248 total yards, which was the fewest allowed in a game since they gave up 245 to FIU on Nov. 20, 2021. The 67 rushing yards allowed was also the fewest since that same game. The defense held SFA to 3-for-17 on third downs and 1-for-6 on fourth downs and allowed an average of just 3.5 yards per play.
UNT will hit the road again next week with a trip to Lubbock's Jones AT&T Stadium to face Texas Tech on Saturday at 11 a.m., in a game that can be seen on FS1.
