UNT Suffers First Loss to. No. 24 South Florida

DENTON - UNT went blow-for-blow with the nation's 24th-ranked team for the first half of Friday's showdown with South Florida at a sold out DATCU Stadium, but couldn't overcome a flurry of unanswered points by the Bulls that led to a 63-36 win to hand the Mean Green their first loss of the season.

UNT (5-1), in front of a UNT record 31,386, continued its season-long trend early in the game with three first-quarter forced turnovers to push its season total to 14, which leads all of FBS. The Mean Green's 21-14 lead in the second quarter evaporated quickly when the Bulls reeled off 28 unanswered points in a span of three minutes, 27 seconds of game time to build a 42-21 South Florida lead less than four minutes into the second half.

A muffed punt inside the final minute of the first half set up a game-tying South Florida touchdown with just two seconds remaining to make the score 21-21 at halftime, and a UNT interception early in the third quarter - one of five UNT turnovers on the night - gave the Bulls the ball on the UNT 15-yard line to set up another quick score. Before the Mean Green knew what hit them, the Bulls had a 21-point lead.

Early in the third quarter, UNT tried to regain some momentum with a 54-yard catch-and-run touchdown from Miles Coleman to pull within 14 points, but the Bulls answered less than two minutes later with a 63-yard touchdown pass of their own.

UNT will now prepare to host UTSA at DATCU Stadium on Oct. 18, with a kickoff time still to be announced.

UNT has 28 red-zone touchdowns this season and has scored in 33 of 35 trips inside the opposing 20-yard line this year. The 28 red-zone touchdowns is the most in FBS.
RS Freshman QB Drew Mestemaker (Austin, Texas) finished 30-of-46 for 326 yards passing and two touchdowns through the air. He also rushed a touchdown.
- Mestemaker's 326 passing yards gave him his second 300-yard passing day of the year and first since the season opener against Lamar, when he had 329 yards through the air.
- Mestemaker's 2-yard touchdown run with 8:42 left in the first quarter was his third rushing score of the season and fourth of his career.
- Mestemaker's 54-yard touchdown pass to Miles Coleman with 9:35 left in the third quarter was his 12th of the season and 14th of his career.
- Mestemaker's 10-yard touchdown pass to Tre Williams III with 7:53 left in the game was his 13th of the season and 15th of his career.
- Mestemaker's first-quarter interception was his first of the season and ended his streak of pass attempts without one at 164 – the third longest streak in program history behind Mason Fine (2018) and Chandler Rogers (2023).
Freshman RB Caleb Hawkins (Shawnee, Okla.) finished the day with 15 carries for 49 yards and added two catches for 15 yards.
- Hawkins' 30-yard run midway through the third quarter was the longest rush of his career.
Sophomore RB Makenzie McGill II (Mount Vernon, Texas) finished the day with seven carries for 31 yards and a touchdown.
- McGill's 23-yard touchdown run with 0:12 left in the first quarter was his fifth of the season and 15th of his career. His 15 are the most among non-P4 running backs over the last two seasons.
Sophomore WR Miles Coleman (Austin, Texas) finished the day with seven catches for 101 yards and a touchdown.
- Coleman's 101 yards gave him his second career 100-yard receiving day, with the first coming in the First Responders Bowl against Texas State on Jan. 3, 2025.
- Coleman's 54-yard touchdown reception with 9:35 left in the third quarter was his fourth overall career touchdown, second touchdown of the season and first receiving score of the year.
Sophomore WR Wyatt Young (Katy, Texas) finished the day with seven catches for 79 yards and added an 11-yard rushing touchdown.
- Young's 11-yard touchdown run with 6:12 left in the second quarter was his first rushing score of the season and second of his career.
Senior TE Tre Williams III (Calhoun, Ga.) finished the day with two catches for 15 yards and a touchdown.
- His 10-yard touchdown reception with 7:53 left to play was his third of the season and 14th of his career.
Senior WR Cameron Dorner (New Market, Md.) finished the day with five catches for 73 yards.
New defensive coordinator Skyler Cassity came to UNT from Sam Houston and brought six of his players with him to Denton.
- Senior CB David Fisher (Houston, Texas), senior LB Trey Fields (Danciger, Texas), senior CB Da'Veawn Armstead (Baton Rouge, La.), senior DL Richard Outland Jr. (Houston) and senior DL Briceon Hayes (Huntsville, Texas), all former Bearkats, started the game on defense.
- Fisher made his fifth start for UNT and 33rd consecutive start when he's been available to play, dating back to his time at Sam Houston.
The Mean Green had 16 takeaways a year ago and already have 14 (seven interceptions and seven fumble recoveries) on the season, which is the most in the country.
UNT's fumble recovery with 7:00 left in the first quarter was its seventh of the season, which tied for second nationally with East Carolina. Illinois leads the nation with eight.
UNT converted an early South Florida fumble into seven points, giving the Mean Green 73 points off turnovers this season – the most for UNT since the 2014 season when it scored 88.

Junior DL Ethan Day (Ripon, Calif.) finished the day with one tackle and a fumble recovery.
- His fumble recovery with 12:42 left in the first quarter was the second of his career and his first at UNT. That first one came on a sack-fumble recovery against then-Washington State quarterback John Mateer when Day was at Wyoming.
Sophomore K Kali Nguma (Mission, Texas) finished 4-for-4 on extra points.
- Nguma is 86-for-86 in his career on extra points, tied with Trevor Moore (2014-17) for career extra point percentage (1.000), as Moore was 154-for-154 on PATs in his career.
- His 86 consecutive extra point attempts converted is the third-longest streak in program history - next is 134 by Ethan Mooney (2019-22).
- His 86 career extra points made moves him into fifth place on the program's all-time list, as he passed Zach Olen (2010-13), who had 83.
