Mean Green Drop Finale to UAB

DENTON, Texas — With their postseason fate on the line on Thursday night, the Mean Green soccer team came up just short in a 3-2 loss to UAB to close out their season while honoring six seniors.

UNT (6-10-4, 2-5-3 American) needed a win to qualify for the conference tournament but was playing from behind early on, as UAB (7-5-6, 4-3-3) got on the board first in the 16th minute and took a 1-0 halftime lead before pushing it to a 3-0 lead in the 78th minute.

That didn't last long, however, as senior Rachel Roebuck capped her remarkable career with a 25-yard rocket off her left foot that cut UAB's lead to 3-1 just 11 seconds after the final Blazers goal.

The Mean Green pulled to within 3-2 in the 84th on an own goal that was set up by a corner kick after Roebuck, who led the team in shots after moving up top after halftime from her usual center back position, ripped another shot from distance that was punched over the crossbar from UAB's goalkeeper.

"Obviously, we're all disappointed in the result tonight but I'm very proud how this team stayed together and fought for each other, especially with all the injuries we faced this year," head coach John Hedlund said. "It hasn't been easy for any of us, and at times it looked like a MASH unit in the training room but we all stayed together and played our best soccer in the month of October, getting results against quality opponents like Tulsa, Rice, South Florida and FAU.

"As far as the seniors tonight, I have a heavy heart because players like Rachel, Abi, Peyton, Summer and Micah have played their last game for me. I will not only miss these players on the field for next year but the day-to-day interaction I have had with them throughout their career. It's always the toughest part of being a head coach is saying goodbye, but for me, these seniors will never be forgotten. Great memories."

UNT had several solid chances earlier on, as Lillian Vandiver had a header go off the crossbar just after UAB's first goal, and Ella Bushko hit a ball off the crossbar from distance in the 73rd minute. The Mean Green ended up outshooting UAB, 17-16.

The Mean Green said goodbye to six seniors, who played their final match for UNT. Summer Brown, the program's active goals (18) and games played (75, tied with Abi Major) leader, Micah Beasley, Drew Lessert, Peyton Renfro, who is third in active career starts (50) and assists (9), Major and Roebuck, who is the active career starts for UNT leader (71), tied for second in career goals (12) and first in assists (14).

"My four years at UNT have meant everything to me," Roebuck said. "Playing here has truly been one of the greatest honors of my life. These years gave me more than just soccer. They gave me family, memories, and lessons that shaped me into the player and person I am today. I'll forever be grateful for my teammates, coaches, and every moment I got to be on the field for UNT."
