CONCORD, N.C. - The UNT cross country team will take on the rest of the American on Saturday, as the Mean Green will look to make waves at the American Championship meet at Frank Liske Park.
The men's side will be led by sophomore Joseph Wienen, who had a breakout performance at last year's conference championship and will be looking to earn all-conference honors with a top-15 finish. He'll be joined by sophomore Nolan House, junior Connor Bartek, sophomore Aidan Shannon, junior Alan Proenza, sophomore Hunter Hendry and sophomore Matthew Montgomery. The women, which have been facing injury struggles throughout the season, will field a lineup of junior Aditi Silwal, sophomore Ella Bengtsson, freshman Aubrey Milam, senior London Culbreath and freshman Baylee Tapley.
Head coach Erik Stevens said he's looking forward to seeing how his resilient group can come together at the conference level after some peaks and valleys this year on both sides.
"Conference week is always full of energy, and you finally feel like everything you've been training for is ready to all come together," Stevens said. "That's the attitude we are bringing into Charlotte. There have been some ups and downs on both sides, but we have come through it as a group and are ready to toe the line with the best in the American.
"It's all going to come down to leadership and execution this Saturday but we have the right people in place to allow that to play out how it should. I'm excited to see how we work through the race together and start the championship season."
Saturday's meet will be broadcast on ESPN+ with live results on Red Dirt Race Management. The men's 8k race will begin at 8:15 a.m., while the women's 6k will start at 9 a.m.
